Mumbai University Distance Education

The University of Mumbai (known earlier as University of Bombay) is one of the oldest and premier Universities in the India. Established in 1857 following the “Wood’s Education Dispatch,” the University of Mumbai, formerly known as the University of Bombay, is renowned as one of the India’s oldest and most prestigious universities among all. It holds the distinction of being among the first three universities established in the country. As Reflecting the city’s name changed from Bombay to Mumbai, the university’s name was officially altered to the University of Mumbai by government notification as on September 4th, 1996. Additionally, it has been granted University with Potential for Excellence (UPE) status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is a recipient of the PURSE Scheme by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). History of Mumbai University

Over its 161 years of existence, the University has emerged as a cornerstone of intellectual and ethical development within society. The country’s independence necessitated a reorganization of the University’s functions and authority, resulting in the enactment of the Bombay University Act of 1953.

With campuses spanning 243 acres in Vidyanagari and 14 acres in Fort, along with sub-campuses/centers in Ratnagiri (20 acres), Thane (6.50 acres), and Kalyan (6.26 acres), the University hosts 60 departments and institutes and is affiliated with 749 colleges. It has garnered recognition for its industrial and international collaborations and offers a range of professional courses.

On the national stage, the University has excelled in sports, cultural activities, and outreach programs. Over the past five years, there has been a significant increase in undergraduate (104%) and postgraduate (112%) enrollment, as well as a 147% rise in distance education students. The number of research papers published in international journals has surged by 156%. Twelve departments/sections have earned recognition under various national programs, and over eighty faculty members serve on professional bodies. Additionally, teachers have received eighteen national/international awards in the last five years, with about twenty teachers participating in academic activities abroad annually. Furthermore, the University has recently introduced over ten self-supporting courses.
