Indira Gandhi National Open University or IGNOU was established in 1985 when the Parliament of India passed the IGNOU Act 1985. The university is named after the former Prime Minister of India, Smt. Indira Gandhi and thus it is known as ‘The People’s University’. Established with a budget of Rs 20 million, this university is controlled by the Government of India. The university is the largest university in the world with over 4 million active students. The vision of India Gandhi National Open University is to provide quality education to people from all sections of society.
IGNOU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and certification programs to students. These will include programs like BA, BSW, BCA, MCA, MCom, MSc, Event Management, Environmental Studies, Information Security, Performing Arts and Tourism Studies. The university started with 4,528 students but now it has 4 million students, 800+ faculty members, around 600 academic staff and 33,000+ academic counsellors.
The university has 60+ regional centers and 25 international study centers. Being a government university, degrees from IGNOU will add credibility to a student’s profile. Initially, IGNOU offered only two programs, but now the university offers more than 300 programs to students from around the world.

The admission process is conducted completely through online mode. The admissions happen in the month of January. There won’t be any entrance tests for the admissions. The admissions will be conducted as the steps given below.
Step 1: Registration through the Indira Gandhi National Open University admission portal.
Step 2: Students will receive login credentials and access to the application form.
Step 3: Students can fill out the application form and can pay the fees through credit card, net banking, or debit card.
Step 4: Submission of the application form after adding all the details.
Step 5: Confirmation of the admission from the university.
The Indira Gandhi National Open University conducts exams through an examination system called the On-Demand Examination System. This system allows students to choose their examination dates after meeting the study requirements like assignments and projects asked by the university. This will solve the issues of attending inflexible exam schedules and malpractices. This system helps to improve the passing rates and make it more comfortable for the students to balance their work and personal commitments. This system is made of three parts, question paper generation, online registration, and regional center management. Exams are conducted through web camera surveillance and question papers are encrypted. The adaptive nature of this system makes it an example for other distance education institutes.
